Student Enrollment
Purpose
A Student Enrollment represents a Student's academic participation within a specific Academic Year.
A Student Enrollment serves as the bridge between:
- Student
- Academic Year
- Class
- Section
Academic placement, progression, promotion, and participation are managed through Student Enrollments.
Business Context
A Student is a permanent School record.
Academic placement changes as the Student progresses through the School.
Examples:
Student:
- Rahul Sharma
Enrollments:
- 2025-2026 → Grade 5 → Section A
- 2026-2027 → Grade 6 → Section B
- 2027-2028 → Grade 7 → Section A
The Student remains the same.
The Enrollment changes every Academic Year.
Relationships
Student Enrollment to Student
- Each Student Enrollment belongs to exactly one Student.
- A Student may have multiple Student Enrollments.
Student Enrollment to Academic Year
- Each Student Enrollment belongs to exactly one Academic Year.
- An Academic Year may contain many Student Enrollments.
Student Enrollment to Class
- Each Student Enrollment belongs to exactly one Class.
- A Class may contain many Student Enrollments.
Student Enrollment to Section
- A Student Enrollment may be assigned to a Section.
- A Section may contain many Student Enrollments.
Key Design Decisions
Enrollment is Academic Year Specific
Academic placement does not belong to the Student entity.
Academic placement belongs to Student Enrollment.
Examples:
- Class
- Section
- Roll Number
These values may change every Academic Year.
Enrollment is Mandatory for Academic Participation
A Student cannot participate academically without an Enrollment.
Examples:
- Class Allocation
- Attendance
- Assessments
- Academic Reporting
all require an active Enrollment.
One Enrollment per Student per Academic Year
A Student may have only one Enrollment within an Academic Year.
Valid:
- Rahul → 2025-2026 → Enrollment A
- Rahul → 2026-2027 → Enrollment B
Invalid:
- Rahul → 2025-2026 → Enrollment A
- Rahul → 2025-2026 → Enrollment B
Promotion Creates a New Enrollment
Promotion does not modify an existing Enrollment.
Instead:
- Existing Enrollment is completed.
- New Enrollment is created for the next Academic Year.
Example:
2025-2026
- Grade 5
- Section A
Promoted
2026-2027
- Grade 6
- Section B
The Student record remains unchanged.
Class and Section are Enrollment Scoped
Class and Section assignments belong to the Enrollment.
They do not belong to the Student entity.
This supports:
- Promotions
- Reassignments
- Historical Reporting
- Academic History Tracking
Future Enrollment Planning
An Enrollment may exist before Class and Section allocation.
Example:
- Admission Approved
- Academic Year Assigned
- Class Allocation Pending
This supports admission season planning and staged onboarding.
Historical Academic Records
Historical Enrollments must always be preserved.
Examples:
- Previous Academic Years
- Previous Classes
- Previous Sections
- Promotion History
Academic history should remain available throughout the Student lifecycle.

Constraints
Enrollment Uniqueness

- Class
- Section
Valid:
- Grade 6A → Roll 1
- Grade 6B → Roll 1
Invalid:
- Grade 6A → Roll 1
- Grade 6A → Roll 1
Academic Ownership
Class and Section assignments must be managed through Enrollment.
They must not be stored on the Student entity.
Administrative Ownership
School Administrators may:
- Create Enrollments
- Promote Students
- Transfer Students
- Withdraw Students
- Assign Classes
- Assign Sections
Enrollment management is always scoped to the School.
Exclusions
The following information does not belong directly to Student Enrollment:
- Student Personal Information
- Parent Information
- User Accounts
- Attendance Records
- Fee Records
- Assessment Records
These belong to their respective domain entities.
Future Considerations
The following capabilities may be introduced later:
- Automatic Promotion Rules
- Batch Promotion
- Enrollment Approval Workflows
- Class Allocation Rules
- Section Allocation Rules
- Academic Term Support
These capabilities should not require redesign of the Enrollment model.
